Don't
1. Dress in business clothes with shoes well
shined. Get a fresh haircut and trim facial hair.
Make up should be applied sparingly.
1. Don't wear excessive jewelry. Men should
not wear earrings and most employers don't want to
see facial jewelry.
2. Do plan on arriving on time or a few minutes
early. Late arrival for a job interview is never excusable.
2. Don't lie. Answer questions truthfully,
frankly and as to the point as possible. Do not ever
make derogatory remarks about past employers.
3. Fill out applications neatly and completely.
Give resumes only to the person who actually does
the hiring.
3. Don't smoke, even if the interviewer smokes
and offers you a cigarette. Do not chew gum.
4. Shake hands firmly. A weak or clammy handshake
always leaves a bad impression.
4. Don't answer questions with a simple yes
or no. Explain in detail, but don't over answer.
5. Wait until you are offered a chair before
you sit; sit upright and stay alert and interested.
Be a good listener, maintain eye contact and communicate
clearly. Smile!
5. Don't inquire about salary, benefits or
bonuses on the initial interview unless you are sure
the interviewer wants to hire you. If the interviewer
asks what salary you want, indicate that the opportunity
is of more interest to you than a specific salary.
6. Do follow the interviewers leads, but try
to get him/her to describe the position and duties
early so you can relate your background and skills
to the position. Make sure that your good points get
across in a factual, sincere manner. Realize that
you alone can sell yourself.
6. Ask questions but don't push too hard and
try to control the interview. Probing questions you
might ask are: a. Detailed description of the position?
b. Why is the position available? c. What are the
company growth plans? d. What is the next step?
7. Always conduct yourself as if you are determined
to get the job you are discussing. Never close the
door on an opportunity.
7. Don't show up on an interview without having
at least two professional work-related references
available.
